We have a long lasting family tradition of doing sugar cookies as a family. Started long ago with my Dad's love of frosting and our kid desires to be creative. This tradition has continued to include the Grand kids. We made a special night of it, however this year we changed up a few things. Normally we get together to bake and decorate. However with lots of little ones and bed times we needed to alter our activity. Each family was in charge of making their own Sugar Cookies. We came to Grandma and Grandpa's house to decorate with the family. Doug is very supportive of any fun cooking endeavor. He helped roll the dough and Zac was very excited to cut out some fun shapes.
(Notice the pumpkin shaped cookie, tastes the same as the tree, but
feels wrong). We tried a new recipe this year from the Better Homes and
Gardens Cook book. It was good but crumbled a bit more when I was
frosting the cookies. Next year we are going to try the classic
Coulliette Cookie recipe and see how that turns out.
The concept of a perfectly frosted cookie was wasted on the kids. Most of them just licked off the frosting or poured on coma causing amounts of sprinkles. I had to remind myself that the purpose of their cookie frosting fun was to have fun and not necessary become a perfectionist with frosting like me.
They quickly caught on that instead of putting the frosting on the cookie they could just lick it off the spoons and knives. Uncle Michael liked this idea too!
See what I mean about Sugar HIGH!!! Look Isaac has crazy eyes as he pours on more sprinkles and Zac is about to fall over from giggling, induced by the sugar rush of several cookies and lots of frosting.
I made the frosting this year. Most of the time it was Suzanne and I watching the kids to make sure they were sharing. When Grandma came over to get some frosting for Grandpa's cookies the kids quickly pipped up that the frosting was all gone, Grandpa was too slow!
The tradition lives on! We all love that the kids quickly caught on how fun this can be and were even willing (when begged) to spare some frosting for cookies to give to Grandpa Max.
